Commemorative Program Fact Sheet

The Masters of Amateur Golf

The 2012 Western Amateur Tournament, sponsored by the Western Golf Association and the Evans Scholar Foundation, returns to Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Illinois from July 30 to August 4. Dating back to 1899, the Western Amateur is one of the oldest, most important tests in amateur golf and was previously played at Exmoor in 1904 and 1952. The tournament will host 156 of the best amateur golfers from around the world. Among past winners have been Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard, Ryan Moore and many others.

The Program Book

The Western Amateur tournament is expected to draw a gallery of over 1200 to the five days of stroke and match play. Exmoor is producing a full-color high-end magazine-format bound program book that will outline all of the details of the week, including the histories of the WGA, The Western Amateur, Exmoor and profiles of current and famous past winners. Past Evans Scholars, including those from Exmoor, will be profiled. It will illustrate the course with a hole-by-hole description, distinguishing features and design history, as well as the strategy for play. The program will be distributed on-course as well as to sponsors and all media in advance. It will also be distributed to the 7 other clubs who have, or will host the tournament in coming years. You can view last year's program book at right.

Evans Scholar Foundation

In 1929 famed golfer Chick Evans, Jr., himself at onetime an Exmoor member, asked the Western Golf Association to administer the fund he had established some years earlier to send caddies with excellent grades, strong character and financial need to college. The next year WGA awarded its first two scholarships. Since then more than 10,000 young men and women have been awarded full, four year scholarships to one of the 14 universities where the foundation operates a Scholarship House.
